Chevrolet has announced details of the 2009 Corvette ZR1 with the promise of an American supercar that will establish new benchmarks for production-based power and performance. Coming almost two decades after the official launch of the Corvette ZR1 at the Geneva Auto Show in 1989, the 2009 ZR1 features a long list of specialized components that include extensive use of carbon-fiber paneling and an all-new LS9 supercharged 6.2L V-8 that’s expected to create 620 horsepower with around 595 lb.-ft. of torque.  Though full performance specs will not be released until the vehicle’s summer 2008 launch draws closer, predictions are that the new ZR1 will be the first production Corvette to achieve a top speed of at least 200 mph, making it the the most powerful and fastest automobile ever produced by General Motors and giving it the performance to claim dominance over foreign competition like the Porsche 911 GT2, the Ferrari 599 and the Lamborghini LP640.

The Corvette Z06 will be featured on the National Geographic Channel on November 29th.  The show will air at 10:00 pm this Thursday.

More than 50,000 people a year visit the Bowling Green facility to see Corvettes being built, but “the “Ultimate Factories” crew was able to capture a lot of the behind-the-scenes work that goes into making this great vehicle,” said plant manager Wil Cooksey Jr.

Building the Z06 requires attention to detail. For example, each 505-horsepower, LS7 V-8 engine is hand built and autographed by the worker who assembled it.

The 2008 Corvette Z06 has a starting price of $71,000. Estimated fuel economy is 15 mpg city and 24 highway.

If you do not get the National Geographic channel you can view the trailer for this show on the Internet at http://link.brightcove.com/services/link/bcpid192889067/bctid1309638525

work has started on preparing the location for a 47,000-square-foot expansion of the Corvette Museum in Bowling Green.  Preps are scheduled to be complete in the spring, with construction of the facility expected to start shortly there after.

The expansion will add 47,000 square feet to the existing 69,000 square feet and will include a library-archives, an expanded gift store and a conference center with a seating capacity of 400. The center also can be used to display 50 additional cars.

It also will add a dedicated area for inspection, display and pickup of special-delivery Corvettes people order from the General Motors Bowling Green Assembly Plant.

State Rep. C.B. Embry wants to enshrine the Corvette as Kentucky’s official state sports car.

Launched in 1953, the Corvette is manufactured solely in Warren County, Kentucky.  It is not the only car manufactured in Kentucky, hence the naming it as the Official Sports Car, not official vehicle.

Embry does not yet have a co-spoonsor of the bill, but expects broad support once the legislature returns in January.
